通過航空模型活動，青少年們可以學到飛行原理、空氣動力學、材料與結構、航空發(fā)動機、無線電遙控、氣象等有關航空知識。誠然，這些知識一般講是比較粗淺的，但通過航模學到的知識具有多種學科、從實踐到理論多次反復的特點，這些特點可以一定程度彌補學習內(nèi)容過于單一的缺陷。例如訓練飛行員難以用許多課時講飛機結構設計問題，而這些知識對飛行業(yè)務也是很重要的。一個飛機設計人員一生不過搞幾個機種，并且往往只接觸某些部件，人們很難超越這種客觀局限性。模型愛好者可以反復設計、制作、試飛許多機型，并且都是模型飛機的整體，從而形成整體的互相聯(lián)系的思想。美國航空先驅(qū)蘭利少設計制造了80多架模型飛機，他的航空知識和成功主要來自這些模型的試驗和研究。
